I’ve owned a small grocery store for nearly forty years. In that time, I’ve seen my fair share of shoplifters—usually teenagers testing boundaries or desperate people trying to get away with what they can.
But nothing prepared me for what I saw that day.
It was freezing outside when I noticed a tiny girl standing near the bread aisle.
At first, I assumed she was just another problem I’d have to deal with. My instincts told me to watch her closely, maybe even call the police if she tried anything.
But something about her didn’t feel right.
She wasn’t acting like a thief. She was hesitating… watching shelves she clearly didn’t know how to navigate, holding herself together as if she was carrying far more than she could handle.
What I discovered when I finally approached her broke something in me—and turned everything I thought I knew upside down.
