At first glance, it looks like a massive rock twisted by unimaginable forces.
But it is not a rock.
Known as “The Meteor,” this extraordinary object was recovered from the ruins of the World Trade Center after the September 11 attacks. Experts believe it is a fused mass of debris containing parts of approximately four to five floors of the towers, compressed together during the collapse.
Within this single object are layers of steel, concrete, floor trusses, electrical wiring, and office materials, all crushed and welded into one dense mass by the tremendous force of the disaster.
Recovery workers gave it the nickname “The Meteor” because of its appearance—like a giant object that had fallen from space. Yet its true significance is far more profound.
It represents entire sections of a skyscraper. Offices where people worked. Spaces filled with everyday life. Stories, memories, and moments that disappeared in an instant.
Today, The Meteor stands as one of the most powerful artifacts preserved from that tragic day, offering a sobering reminder of the immense destruction caused by the collapse and honoring the thousands of lives forever changed.
Its silent presence continues to tell a story that must never be forgotten.
