While most EVs require between 70 and 100 kWh of battery capacity to achieve roughly 300 miles of driving range, Tesla engineers are reportedly targeting an astonishing 303 miles from a battery pack smaller than 50 kWh.

If achieved, that would translate to around 165 watt-hours per mile — a number Tesla has already referenced while calling the Cybercab the most energy-efficient EV ever certified. For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 averages roughly 254 Wh per mile, while the Tesla Model Y comes in closer to 280 Wh per mile.

The significance goes far beyond efficiency bragging rights. A smaller battery pack means lower manufacturing costs, lighter vehicle weight, faster charging times, and reduced long-term energy consumption. All of those factors play directly into Tesla’s ambitious goal of creating a robotaxi platform capable of operating for under $0.20 per mile — a number that could dramatically reshape the economics of ride-hailing services.

Tesla’s approach reportedly relies on a purpose-built two-seat design, advanced aerodynamic optimization, and a powertrain engineered for maximum efficiency rather than raw performance. Instead of prioritizing speed and horsepower, the Cybercab appears designed around consistency, low operating cost, and nonstop autonomous driving capability.

With production reportedly ramping up at Gigafactory Texas and Robotaxi expansion plans targeting cities like Austin, Dallas, and Houston, the Cybercab’s projected efficiency numbers are becoming one of the biggest talking points in the EV industry. If Tesla successfully delivers more than 300 miles of range from a sub-50 kWh battery, it could become one of the strongest proof points yet for the company’s long-term autonomous transportation strategy.

Tesla is aiming to push electric vehicle efficiency to a completely new level with its upcoming Tesla Cybercab.
